Earth Hour to go beyond the hour

Article taken from : http://maldivestraveller.mv

Earth Hour will be marked throughout the Maldives this year as well, one of the most prominent global awareness event that garners the attention of every citizen of the World about global warming and the consequences of climate change.

Organised by the World Wild Fund (WWF), the Earth Hour - the largest campaign in history - this year will be going "beyond the hour", celebrating environmental actions that will help conserve just more than electricity but many more needs that mother nature is now demanding upon mankind.

In the event that brings people together from all races, beliefs, cultures, genders, geographies and ages, this year will see a significant paradigm shift in the way the world thinks about the environment we all share. Hopefully, a forum for ordinary people working single-handedly and in groups will be formed, thus forming a platform for sharing innovative ideas for bringing about positive change.

At 8:30pm, 26 March worldwide, people will be switching off lights to mark the importance of energy conservation and also, sustain their actions from then on. 100 days later, an exhibition of the actions and events arising from the Earth hour will be organised to display the commitment by the growing community of environmentally oriented people.

In the hope that this event will forever change the way mankind uses the Earth's irreplaceable resources, the Earth Hour will help in making people and businesses realize their potential to apply greener methods of doing the same thing. After all, electricity can be generated with renewable resources, and electricity is one of the most important tools that we use to run technology that helps keep the whole world as a global village, as well as to operate countless other time saving equipments.

In 2009, the Maldivian television broadcasting channels stopped their broadcasts during the Earth Hour in addition to numerous demonstrative walks and a no-driving rule during the earth hour.

Last year, the Maldives took one step further and extended the no-driving rule from 4pm up to 12 am, and also fined vehicles that are on the road without authorisation.

Several resorts and hotels in the Maldives also participated in the event. Shangri-La's Villingili Resort and Spa had made special arrangements for guests to opt for an organic moonlit massage with virgin coconut oil, manufactured locally, while Bandos Island Resort and Spa distributed awareness messages to their guests, they also stopped their generators during the hour.

Maldives Traveller will keep posting updates on news and events related to this year's: 'Earth Hour - Go beyond the Hour'.
